Who We Are
The Institute for Consumer Rights and Product Liability Protection Ltd/Gte (ICRP) is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection and the enforcement of consumer rights, enforcement of product liability standards, and promotion of accountability.
Through advocacy, education, awareness campaigns and litigation, we ensure that consumer rights and the dignity of consumers are respected across Nigeria in every transaction, whether commercial, institutional, or governmental.
We are non-partisan, consumer-driven, and committed to building a Nigeria where marketplace accountability is not a privilege but an enforceable right guaranteed to every person.
We want a just Nigerian society in which every consumer enjoys enforceable rights, and in every transaction, the consumer's dignity is respected and violators of the consumer's rights and consumer protection laws held accountable.
To assert, defend, and enforce consumer rights and ensure safe products and fair practices through strategic litigation, policy advocacy, regulatory engagement, public education, awareness campaigns and direct intervention; to challenge unsafe products and unfair practices; and to expand access to justice for consumers, particularly the vulnerable.
WHAT WE DO

We advocate for the rights of consumers against defective products, deceptive practices, and corporate negligence across Nigerian markets.

We provide a structured and confidential channel for consumers to lodge complaints and receive resolution through mediation or formal proceedings.

We educate Nigerian consumers about their rights, market standards, and how to identify and respond to violations in everyday transactions.

We engage lawmakers, regulators, and agencies to shape policies that genuinely protect the Nigerian consumer's interest at every level.

We publish research reports, legal guides, and consumer advisories to inform the public and shape consumer protection discourse in Nigeria.

We take on landmark cases in court to enforce consumer protection laws and set precedents that benefit all Nigerian consumers.

CONSUMER RIGHTS
ICRP President and Executive Director Chidi E. Ike raises the alarm on the widening enforcement gap in Nigeria's consumer protection landscape, warning that the failure to enforce existing consumer rights laws is leaving millions of Nigerian consumers exposed to exploitation, dangerous products, and unfair commercial practices. The Institute for Consumer Rights and Product Liability Protection Ltd/Gte (ICRP) is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting Nigerian consumers. We advocate for consumer rights, resolve complaints, educate the public, engage policymakers, publish research, and take legal action — including litigation — against companies and individuals who violate consumer rights or sell unsafe products. We serve all Nigerians across all 36 states and the FCT.
No. ICRP is a fully independent, non-profit civil society organisation — not a government agency. We are registered in Nigeria as a company limited by guarantee (Ltd/Gte), which is the legal structure for non-profit bodies in Nigeria. Our independence means we are free from political, corporate, or governmental influence, and our only obligation is to the Nigerian consumer. We work alongside regulatory bodies like the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) but are not affiliated with any of them.
Any Nigerian consumer who has been treated unfairly in a commercial transaction can file a complaint with us. This includes people who have purchased defective products, received substandard services, been misled by false advertising, overcharged, had a contract breached, or suffered a health or safety risk from a product or service. You do not need to hire a lawyer to file a complaint with us. Our complaint process is free, accessible, and confidential.
The process is straightforward. Step 1: Submit your complaint online using our Consumer Complaint Form – providing your personal details, the company or individual involved, a description of what happened, and the outcome you are seeking. Step 2: ICRP reviews your complaint within 5 working days and contacts you. Step 3: Depending on the nature of your complaint, we may pursue mediation, engage the relevant regulatory authority, or — where appropriate — initiate legal action. All submissions are treated with strict confidentiality.
No. ICRP is a non-profit organisation, and our consumer-facing services — including complaint filing, complaint resolution, and consumer education — are provided free of charge. We are funded through institutional support, grants, and partnerships, not through fees charged to consumers. Our mission is to expand access to justice, particularly for vulnerable Nigerians who cannot afford legal representation. Filing a complaint with ICRP costs you nothing.
Yes — where appropriate. One of ICRP's core services is consumer and public interest litigation. We take on cases in court to enforce consumer protection laws, particularly where a company's conduct has caused significant harm or affects a large number of consumers. However, filing a complaint does not automatically guarantee legal representation or court action. Every complaint is reviewed on its merits, the public interest involved, and available resources. If your case qualifies for litigation, we will inform you and proceed accordingly — with your consent.
As a Nigerian consumer, you have eight fundamental rights: the Right to be Informed, the Right to Safety, the Right to Choose, the Right to Basic Needs, the Right to be Heard, the Right to Privacy and Data Protection, the Right to Consumer Education, and the Right to Redress. These rights are recognised under Nigerian consumer protection law and are enforceable. ICRP exists to ensure that these rights are not merely written on paper but are actively protected and enforced on your behalf in every transaction.
Absolutely. ICRP takes data privacy very seriously. All information you provide is handled in strict confidence and processed solely for the purpose of investigating your complaint, pursuing resolution, and, where applicable, initiating advocacy or litigation. Your data is protected in accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Your personal information will only be shared with relevant regulatory authorities or legal institutions where it is necessary to pursue your case — and only with your consent. We will never sell, publish, or misuse your data.
ICRP covers all sectors where consumers transact — including Banking and Finance, Telecommunications, Manufacturing, Retail and E-commerce, Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals, Food and Beverages, Insurance, Real Estate, Energy and Utilities, and Transportation and Logistics. If you have purchased a product or received a service from any business, in any industry, anywhere in Nigeria, and your rights as a consumer were violated, ICR P can assist you. Our mandate is nationwide and sector-wide.
There are several ways to support ICRP's work. Organisations — including law firms, NGOs, civil society bodies, academic institutions, and corporate entities committed to consumer welfare — can formally partner with us to advance consumer rights across Nigeria. Individuals can support us by spreading awareness of consumer rights in their communities, sharing our publications, or reporting violations they observe. To explore a formal partnership, reach out to us directly at [email protected] with the subject line "Partnership Enquiry". Together, we can build a Nigeria where every consumer is protected.
